Ethel F. Beckford/Richmond Elementary ZooMS Magnet school is the Elementary Center for the study of Zoology, Math and Science Technology. Our teachers instruct using the Florida Sunshine State Standards and Miami Dade County CBC as well as a teacher created thematic curriculum. Math, science, and environmental studies are integrated in order to promote student understanding of the relationship of these studies, their importance in our daily lives, and their effect on our future. We focus on activity based instruction and scientific method by utilizing math tools, science kits, animal observations, and on and off campus environmental field investigations.
The Richmond ZooMS curriculum is based upon hands-on, activity based, experiential learning. Students benefit from this curriculum because it allows those of different learning modalities to achieve success in a variety of ways. The curriculum also gives teachers additional opportunities to utilize alternative assessments - those which more accurately portray the competency and understanding of our students.
